Caught between extremes: The Afar people fight for survival
For the two million people living in Ethiopia’s north-eastern Afar region, the past year has been one of ongoing disaster. A pastoralist community deeply connected to their land and livestock, they now grapple with a series of droughts, floods, conflict, earthquakes, malnutrition and disease.
Water sources vanish, only to return in destructive torrents. Livestock, lifelines for the Afar people, both die of thirst and drown in their sleep. Pastures, dry and barren, fleetingly recover, only to be consumed by locusts.
Yet, through it all, the people of Afar show a profound resilience in their capacity to persevere and hope for the future.
With your compassion today, you can help these families recover from disaster and rebuild for the future.
