Ethiopia is a country that has long faced the harsh realities of disaster - whether caused by nature, climate change, disease, or conflict. During times of crisis, addressing immediate needs is crucial, but the path to recovery requires more than just short-term aid. Restoring homes, schools, hospitals and other vital infrastructure is vital, yet equally important is empowering communities to restore their livelihoods and withstand future crises, when or if they happen. True recovery involves both physical reconstruction and the sustained support necessary to foster lasting self-sufficience and prosperity.

When cholera struck Teeru in the Afar region of Afar, our project partner, Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA), knew immediately that time was of the essence.
Cholera is an acute diarrheoal disease that can kill within hours if is ieft untreated. It spreads with terrifying rapidity, and less than a day after the first case appeared in Afar, dozens of others were sick.
Thanks to our Australian supporters, within mere hours of receiving news of this outbreak, we were able to send emergency funds to APDA to help them contain the spread. APDA deployed health workers and transported water purification tablets, soap, and rehydration medications to affected communities.
Valerie Browning, who led APDA's rapid response to this outbreak, described the emergency funding from Australia as “utterly life-saving”, and reported that the quick turnaround of funds and deployment saved thousands of people from falling ill and possibly dying. Moreover, the speed of APDA's response proved to be absolutely crucial for overall disease containment.
Your support gives our partners the power to respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently, saving lives and helping to reduce the devastating impact of crises when they hit.

Founded by Australian nurse Valerie Browning and Afar leaders in 1993, the Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA) was created to meet the unique needs faced by the isolated and nomadic people of Afar. Today, APDA fights to end female genital mutilation and child marriage, advocate for the rights of women, and build up mobile, adaptable health and education services, provide emergency relief, and help communities rebuild following disaster.
