Strengthening Communities Through Care, Education and Opportunity in Gondar

20 July 2026

In the historic city of Gondar, Ethiopia, local organisation Yenege Tesfa Integrated Development Humanitarian Organization is creating brighter futures for some of the country’s most vulnerable children, women and families.

As an Ethiopiaid Australia project partner, Yenege Tesfa works quietly but powerfully behind the scenes—providing protection, education, healthcare and livelihood opportunities to people facing some of life’s greatest challenges.

Through its community-led programs, Yenege Tesfa is helping children not only survive, but thrive.

Creating safe spaces for vulnerable children

One of Yenege Tesfa’s key programs, “Home for Tomorrow,” provides essential support to children living in group homes. During the last quarter, 84 children received food and hygiene supplies, while 86 children and caregivers received new bedding to improve comfort, dignity and wellbeing.

Caregivers also took part in psychosocial training, strengthening their ability to provide safe, supportive environments for children who have experienced hardship and trauma.

For younger children, Yenege Tesfa’s daycare centre continues to provide a safe place to learn, grow and receive essential care. Forty-three children benefited from early learning, nutrition and protection services—support that also allows single mothers to work and support their families.

Across Gondar and Debark, 602 preschool children received daily meals, helping improve attendance, growth and learning outcomes.

Keeping children in school

Education is at the heart of Yenege Tesfa’s work, with programs designed to ensure children, especially girls -have the opportunity to continue their education.

During the last quarter, 182 students received scholarships, sanitary materials and monthly assistance to help remove barriers that can prevent children from attending school.

The organisation also supports children living on the streets through feeding programs, mobile schooling, library services and hygiene support, reaching thousands of vulnerable children with opportunities for learning and connection.

New uniforms, new opportunities. Your generosity is helping children attend school with confidence and hope for the future.

Building stronger, more sustainable communities

Alongside its direct support for children and families, Yenege Tesfa is also working to strengthen long-term sustainability.

Through agriculture, livestock, dairy and poultry initiatives, the organisation is generating income to help support its programs and reduce reliance on external funding. These projects are helping build stronger community foundations while creating pathways towards greater independence.

Your support makes this work possible

Despite rising inflation and increasing transport costs creating challenges for service delivery, Yenege Tesfa continues to stand alongside vulnerable communities with compassion and commitment.

Every meal provided, every child supported and every opportunity created is helping build a safer, healthier future for families across Gondar.

Thanks to the generosity of Ethiopiaid supporters, local organisations like Yenege Tesfa can continue delivering the care, education and opportunities communities need—not just for today, but for generations to come.
