Update: Child Trafficking in Ethiopia's south

26 January 2026

How you're trackling the silent epidemic

It’s called the silent epidemic – child trafficking in Ethiopia. The scale of what’s happening behind closed doors is staggering. And sadly, one city in Ethiopia has become an epicentre for this: Arba Minch, in the southern part of the country.

.

Last August, we ran our first ever appeal to address this terrible and underfunded issue. The response was extraordinary; together the Ethiopiaid community donated an incredible $91,062 and that generosity is already creating change.

Where donations are going:

Project partner, Jerusalem Children & Community Development Organisation (JeCCDO). JeCCDO is implementing a four-year project to tackle the root causes of trafficking and alleviate poverty.

How donations are making a difference:

  • Providing trauma care for children in crisis ($37 per child)
  • Refurbishing childcare centres to keep young children off the street
  • Providing scholarships to keep at-risk children in school
  • Launching campaigns to raise awareness on the warning signs of trafficking
  • Starting livelihood training for single mothers to reduce the poverty that traffickers exploit ($142 per household)

Trafficking thrives where poverty and desperation take hold. By funding education, protection and livelihoods, you’re not only keeping children safe but helping break the cycle of poverty itself.

Ethiopiaid Australia receives no government support, so this work is 100% powered through the compassion of people across Australia. By making a donation today, you can help fuel the ongoing work being done by JeCCDO to protect vulnerable children and tackle the root causes of trafficking.
