Ayana was one of the 165 orphans who found a new life through JeCCDO’s New Chance program in 2013. At the tender age of eight, Ayana found herself wandering the streets of Dire Dawa after losing both her parents, who had been farmers, to famine. She was identified by JeCCDO’s project director, Zelalem, and at the start of last year, was introduced to a family who took her in and provided her with the caring home environment she desperately needed.
“The best thing about meeting Zelalem and my new family was that I was able to go back to school. I got new books and new pencils for the first time I even got a brand new uniform! My favourite subject is English and geography. One day I will travel the world and teach other kids about my home country.”
